The Pet Transport Process
Although there’s a lot to learn about the process of flying a pet outside of the flight itself, we’ve done our best to summarise what the pet transport process is like on travel day.
Unique Dogtainers Add-ons
Rest assured, we will provide nothing but the best service for your pet’s safe and comfortable travel. But for added peace of mind, you can tailor your domestic pet transport plan to make this a stress-free process.
Domestic Pet Flights
The process of flying a pet domestically within Australia is relatively simple, quick, and cost-efficient. First and foremost, get in touch with a trusted, commercial pet transportation company, such as Dogtainers, to organise your pet’s flights. This step is strongly advised by Qantas and mandatory with Virgin Australia. Airlines recommend working with pet transport providers, as any minor oversight, such as an in-appropriately sized crate, could impact your pet’s ability to board their flight.
All pets need to travel in an IATA-specified pet travel crate. These crates are heavily mandated, made of a durable material, and have proper ventilation for pets during travel. We offer airline-approved IATA crates for sale and hire in various sizes, as well as instructions on how best to measure your pet.
Finally, all that’s left to do is bring your pet to the airport. Both of the major domestic pet-friendly airlines have designated pet drop-off zones for this purpose, namely Virgin Australia Cargo and Qantas Freight. Dogtainers can handle this step for you with our door-to-door service.
International Pet Flights
International pet transportation can be quite complicated. That’s why Qantas requires you to book international flights through a commercial pet transport provider, like Dogtainers.
The main reason international pet relocation is so complicated is the stringent regulations and requirements imposed by different countries to prevent the spread of diseases and ensure biosecurity. These regulations often demand specific vaccinations, health certificates, and even quarantine periods, which vary from country to country. Navigating this intricate web of regulations necessitates thorough research, meticulous planning, and adherence to a range of documentation, making the process inherently time-consuming.
We’ve created international pet travel guidesfor many English-speaking countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Europe. We also have guides for popular Asian destinations including Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Fiji, South Korea, and the Philippines.
When they arrive in their destination country, they will likely have to go through customs, and may be required to undergo quarantine. You can find the specific pet import requirements for your destination by checking out its pet travel guide page or by contacting us on 1300 13 52 52.
Pet Travel Crate Requirements for Flights
When selecting a crate, opt for a crate that provides enough room for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. However, avoid going too large, as excessive space can lead to instability during turbulence. We recommend measuring your pet to ensure you select the perfect crate size. Specifically designed for pet flights, a properly sized, IATA-specified crate is essential, as it complies with airline regulations which ensures it will be approved for travel.
What Flights Are Like For Pets.
Airlines employ strict protocols to ensure the welfare of pets throughout their travel. Cargo holds are equipped with temperature control systems that create an optimal environment, guarding pets from temperature extremes and ensuring adequate air circulation. To provide a restful atmosphere, the lights are dimmed while the ambient sound levels are kept at a soothing hum. These integrated measures work to maintain your pet’s comfort, health, and safety during their journey.
Why You Should Choose Dogtainers
There are four different categories recognised by the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources. The categories are based on the rabies risks of animals coming from these countries. Cats and dogs from approved countries are allowed to enter, provided all the veterinary requirements are met.
We are Australia’s largest owner-operated pet transport network and the only pet travel company to have our own offices and staff located in every state in Australia, including the Northern Territory.
Dogtainers has been operating for 50 years, and we import thousands of pets into Australia every year.
We’re an official RSPCA partner and a member of IPATA.
Most importantly, we’re pet lovers just like you! We understand that pets are family, and they deserve to be treated like it.
FAQs About Pet Flights in Australia
Are Pets Allowed in the Cabin with Me?
In most cases, no. Generally, only service animals and other airline-approved animals are allowed in the cabin, while all other animals are held in a compartment, which is usually at the rear of the plane. Pets travel in a temperature-controlled environment that is set to approximately 18 degrees Celsius. The compartment is pressurized in the same way the passenger cabin is and is dimly lit. With the gentle hum of the aircraft, pets often spend the time dozing before reaching their destination.
Can I Fly With My Pet Domestically Within Australia?
Do Pets Need Vaccines To Travel Domestically in Australia?
While it’s not a legal obligation, we highly recommend ensuring your pet is up-to-date with vaccinations. This precaution is taken because animals are more susceptible to illnesses during travel. We also recommend ensuring your pet is microchipped and the information is up-to-date, as this makes it easier to trace lost and stolen pets.

When flying domestically, you won’t require any documents. However, you may want to get a certificate of good health from your veterinarian, as pets are permitted to board based on whether they look fit and healthy.

How Far In Advance Should I Book A Pet Flight?
It’s recommended to book your pet’s flight well in advance, as airlines have limitations on the number of pets allowed per flight. Get in touch with your pet transportation service provider at least one month in advance.
Are Pets Monitored During The Flight For Their Safety And Well-Being?
Airlines do not typically provide real-time monitoring of pets in the cargo hold during the flight. The cargo hold is designed to maintain appropriate temperature, pressure, and ventilation levels, and airlines take precautions to ensure pets’ safety. However, continuous monitoring of pets in the cargo hold is not a standard practice on commercial flights.
