PACMAN Pet Relocation Benefits in Australia

Pet-Travel-Defence-Families_Image-2

A member is eligible to have the cost of pet relocation covered if the military is satisfied the costs are reasonable — assessed on the number of pets, how they’re transported, availability of discounted rates, and whether the animals are pets or used commercially.

Who can provide pet relocation services under PACMAN?

Pets can only be relocated by commercial providers specialising in pet transport and boarding, such as Dogtainers. These transporters must hold an ABN, conduct transports for profit, and be appropriately registered and licensed in their state or territory.

Is the benefit paid before or after transport is complete?

Either. Benefits can be paid before relocation if the member provides a quote or invoice from their pet transport provider, or afterwards by reimbursing the member based on the receipt for services provided.

How do you help maximise reimbursement?

Our Defence Pets partnership means your TOLL quotes are structured to meet every approval requirement up front, reducing back-and-forth and improving your chances of a smooth, successful claim.

Transitioning Out

Pet Transport After Leaving the Military

Your final relocation entitlements often extend to your pets when you separate or discharge from service. As you plan your move back to civilian life, the same PACMAN provisions that supported your postings can help cover the cost of bringing your animals to your new home.

Timeframes around your last day of service, removal of household effects and settling into new accommodation can all shift. We coordinate around your separation date and keep your booking flexible, so a change of plans never means a change of price.

Whether you’re settling locally or moving interstate, our consultants will confirm your remaining entitlements, prepare compliant quotes, and manage the journey end to end — one less thing to organise during a big transition.

A Guide for Defence Members

Preparing for Defence Pet Relocation

Careful planning makes for a smooth, stress-free journey. Here are the key steps to take before your pet’s relocation.

01

Obtain Health Certificates & Vaccinations

Research your destination’s requirements and consult your vet to ensure your pet is up to date on vaccinations and holds a certificate of good health before travel.

02

Research Pet Transport Options

Choose a reputable, experienced provider that specialises in defence relocations — knowledge of military pet travel brings real peace of mind during the process.

03

Acquire a Suitable Travel Crate

Crates must be “IATA-specified” — large enough for your pet to stand, turn and lie down comfortably. We offer IATA-specified crates for hire and sale and can advise on the right fit.

04

Introduce Your Pet to Their Crate

Acclimatise your pet well in advance with familiar toys, bedding and treats inside. Adaptil collars can also help soothe dogs before and during flights.

FAQs About Defence Family Pet Transportation

What Are The Costs Associated With Defence Pet Relocation?

Contact Dogtainers for a personalised quote based on your unique circumstances and needs.

What Is The Process Of Relocating Pets For Defence Families?

The process of relocating pets for defence families depends on whether you’re relocating domestically or internationally. International moves may include obtaining necessary health certificates and vaccinations, ensuring compliance with import/export regulations, arranging transportation with a reputable pet transport company like Dogtainers, and addressing any quarantine requirements. Domestic transports are much simpler, and can be organised and completed with a pet transport company in just a few days. Dogtainers can guide you through the process to ensure a smooth and stress-free relocation for your furry companions.

What Documents Are Required For My Pet's Relocation As A Military Member?

The specific documents required for pet relocation for defence members vary depending on the destination and other factors. Generally, you will need to provide proof of vaccinations, certificate of good health issued by an accredited veterinarian, and any necessary permits or import/export documentation. Dogtainers can assist you in understanding and obtaining the required documents for your pet’s relocation.

What Are The Quarantine Requirements For Pet Relocation When Coming To Australia Or Leaving As A Defence Member?

The quarantine requirements for pet relocation when coming to Australia or leaving as a defence member can vary depending on the country of origin or destination. It is important to check the specific quarantine regulations of the respective countries. How Long Does The Pet Relocation Process Usually Take For Military Members?

The duration of transporting military pets can vary based on factors such as the destination, transportation arrangements, and regulatory compliance. Domestic transport can be as quick as a few days. Exports will take at least one month. Imports to Australia will take at least 6-8 months. Once you’re aware of your situation, it’s recommended to contact a reliable pet transportation company like Dogtainers. We can handle the rest, including arranging pet boarding if necessary.

Are There Any Restrictions On The Types Of Pets That Can Be Relocated For Military Members?

There may be restrictions on the types of pets that can be relocated for military members, depending on the destination and specific regulations. Some countries have restrictions on certain breeds or species, such as “dangerous” breeds of dogs. Some airlines also restrict or prohibit the transport of Brachy Breeds, like pugs. It is advisable to check the import/export regulations of the destination country. Can I Transport Multiple Pets During Defence Pet Relocation?

Professional pet relocation services like Dogtainers can provide personalised guidance to meet these requirements.
