Frequently Asked Questions
Do you provide transportation to the airport?
Yes, we do. If you need pickup or delivery service, these options can be selected on the quote request form or you can discuss them with your consultant.
Your pet will be picked up in a climate-controlled, state-of-the-art vehicle by a Dogtainers pet handling specialist and transported to a premium holding facility before travel. When the time is right, your pet will be taken to the airport, and a Dogtainers handler will be ready at the destination to carefully escort the pet to its final location.
How much does it cost to send a Dog from Australia to New Zealand?
The price for transporting a pet from Australia to New Zealand can vary significantly from case to case. It is always advisable to request a quote from our team to obtain a more accurate estimate of the associated costs. Factors such as the breed and weight of the pet, as well as the origin and destination ports, have an impact on the pricing.
How much is pet transport to Australia?
To provide an accurate estimate for pet transport to Australia, it is recommended to request a quote from our team. The cost can vary based on factors such as the type, breed, and weight of the pet, as well as the specific transportation requirements. Our team will be happy to provide you with a detailed and tailored quote based on your individual needs.
Can you bring a dog to the airport to pick someone up in Australia?
Pets are generally not allowed at the airport unless they are working dogs or securely placed in a kennel. If you have specific requirements or considerations, it is recommended to check with the airport authorities for their regulations and guidelines.
What is airport-to-airport service?
Our airport-to-airport service is the most basic service that we provide, where our team will arrange your pet’s transport from one airport to another. This service doesn’t include pickup and delivery. Therefore, it’s a great budget option if you are able to send your pet off at the airport and pick them up at the destination.
Can I have a tailor made travel plan for my pet?
Certainly! You can request a personalized travel plan for your pet by reaching out to Dogtainers. Our professional pet travel consultants, with their extensive national network, will work with you to create a tailored plan that suits your pet’s specific needs and ensures a comfortable and safe journey. Additionally, we can assist you by adding on services such as extended boarding, collection or delivery from your home or a boarding kennel, veterinary services, and calming products. Feel free to contact Dogtainers to discuss your requirements and customise a travel plan for your beloved pet.
How long before take-off must pets arrive at the airport?
Major airports servicing domestic flights typically require pets to be at the airport 90–120 minutes before departure. Your Dogtainers consultant will confirm the specific time required for each booking, along with the airport address, to ensure your pet meets the airline’s requirements.
If your pet is travelling internationally, your consultant will provide all the necessary details regarding your pet’s movements before departure.
Can I give my pet a meal or treat before they fly?
To prevent travel sickness and crate soiling, refrain from feeding your pet at least eight hours before their travel time. If the pet soils the bedding before takeoff, the airline may reject boarding, leading to a missed flight and possible additional charges.
Should I sedate my pet to reduce the stress of travel?
Please do not sedate your pets for travel. Pets that are under sedation can become dehydrated and disoriented and may experience travel sickness. It also makes it more difficult to assess a pet’s health upon arrival. If the airlines believe your pet has been sedated, they will reject boarding.
For dogs and cats that are particularly anxious, Dogtainers can recommend alternative methods to ensure your pet is as relaxed as possible before travel. For example, you may consider purchasing an Adaptil Collar for Dogs, or adding deluxe vet bedding for your pet’s domestic trip.
Where do pets travel on the plane?
Pets typically travel in the cargo compartment located at the rear of the plane. This compartment is maintained at a temperature of approximately 18 degrees Celsius, regulated by the captain of the flight. Similar to the passenger cabin, the pet compartment is pressurized and dimly lit. With the gentle hum of the aircraft, pets often spend the journey dozing before reaching their destination.
For pets travelling domestically or entering or exiting Australia, they must travel in the cargo hold. It’s important to note that only registered service animals may be allowed to travel in the cabin.
Can my pet’s favourite toy or blanket travel with them?
You can supply your pet with a comfort item such as a soft towel or small blanket for your pet during their transport.
Airlines have a strict ’no toys allowed’ rule. These and other additions such as leads, harnesses, and food aren’t allowed in crates due to the potential choking hazard or turbulence, which may harm your pet.
Dogtainers use newspaper lining in transport crates to absorb any spillage. Deluxe vet bedding is available for extra comfort at an additional charge.
Important documentation or medication not required for transport must be mailed to the receiver and not attached to the travel container as separation of the items from the crate make it extremely difficult to trace.
Airlines do not accept Apple AirTags, and the staff will remove them during the lodgment process.
Any items placed in or on the pet’s crate are at the owner’s risk. They may be destroyed if damaged or soiled, and retrieval of such items may not be possible.
Will my pet travel on the same flight as me?
Whether your pet travels on the same flight as you depends on the airline’s policies and the specific arrangements you make. When using a pet transport service like Dogtainers, pets are scheduled on a flight that is designed to ensure their safety and well-being. It’s important to note that there are not as many spaces for pets as there are for people, and some commercial airlines may not carry animals.
For a seamless experience, it is best to speak to Dogtainers prior to purchasing passenger tickets for your own flight if you would like to travel with your pet. We can provide you with detailed information on your pet’s flight details, including departure and arrival times, and guide you through the process to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey for your pet.
What happens before, during and after the flight?
Before the Flight:
Once lodged at the airline terminal, your pet is placed in a special waiting area by airline staff. To minimise exposure to the elements on the tarmac, pets are the last to be loaded into the cargo hold. Dogtainers provides guidance on necessary documentation, required travel crates, and health requirements.
During the Flight:
On the flight, pets are securely positioned in the temperature-controlled, pressurised area of the aircraft. This compartment is maintained at a temperature of approximately 18 degrees Celsius, regulated by the captain of the flight. Similar to the passenger cabin, the pet compartment is pressurised and dimly lit. With the gentle hum of the aircraft, pets often spend the journey dozing before reaching their destination. It’s important to note that due to the aircraft configuration, airline staff members cannot check on the pets during transit to ensure their safety and comfort.
After the Flight:
Upon arrival, pets are prioritised and the first to be offloaded from the plane, then taken to the cargo terminal. If your pet is transiting through a particular airport en route to their final destination, Dogtainers staff will provide a comfort stop if time allows, ensuring your pet is comfortable and ready for the next leg of their journey. In all other cases, airline staff will transfer your pet to their connecting flight. Whenever possible, Dogtainers will provide updates to ensure a smooth and monitored experience for your pet throughout the entire process.
Which travel crate will my pet travel in?
A suitable travel crate is critical to your pet’s well-being when travelling. This means a crate that is not too small but also means a crate that is not too big. A crate that is too big for your pet can mean if the flight has some turbulence, your pet can become unsettled. Dogtainers are experts in being able to select the correct size for your pet. All crates used by Dogtainers comply with IATA specifications and are therefore approved by the airlines. Dogtainers has extensive information on travel crates on our crate hire page.
I’m travelling today but I won’t be ready for my pet until I’ve set up my new home. Can you make arrangements for my pet?
We sure can! It’s essential to communicate your specific requirements and timeline. Dogtainers has a network of privately owned and approved agent boarding facilities in many destinations. We can work with you to make arrangements for your pet’s transportation that align with your schedule and the setup of your new home. Whether you need a delayed arrival or specific coordination, Dogtainers can provide guidance on the best approach to ensure a smooth transition for your pet once you are ready to welcome them to your new home. Please contact your Dogtainers consultant to discuss the requirements for entry, local pricing, and availability, particularly in peak seasons. Dogtainers can also offer many other services whilst boarding such as exercise plans, hydro bathing and grooming services.
I’m unsure of the style of service I may need?
If you’re unsure about the style of service you may need for your pet, just ask! Our professional team can assist you based on your specific requirements and your pet’s needs. Whether you’re considering airport-to-airport transport, door-to-door services, or additional amenities like boarding and grooming, Dogtainers can provide personalized advice for the most suitable and stress-free travel experience for your pet.
Dogtainers can adapt our services to meet your needs. This includes a complete door-to-door service, where your pet is picked up from your residence in one of our climate-controlled vans. Depending on the flight schedule, your pet may be taken to boarding or directly to the airport. We ensure their smooth journey, from collection to delivery at the destination. For international travel, our comprehensive service covers customs clearance and other necessary requirements in the destination country.
What else can I do to ensure my pet has a safe and comfortable trip?
The first rule to follow is to stay relaxed. Pets can sense stress in humans, and it makes them uneasy, especially during changes like a domestic or overseas move. When you send your pets with Dogtainers, trust that they will receive the highest standard of care. All decisions made for your pet, including routing, day and time of travel, crate size, and other relevant factors, are based on ensuring the highest level of welfare for your pet. For tips on preparing a pet for travel, you can refer to our guide on pet travel preparation.
What if my pet needs a vet?
If your pet requires veterinary attention during travel, Dogtainers are equipped to handle such situations. We have established protocols to address health concerns and ensure the well-being of pets throughout their journey. Here’s what you can expect:
1. Pre-Travel Health Check:
Before travel, ensure your pet has undergone a thorough health check by a veterinarian to identify any existing health issues.
2. Communication with Dogtainers:
Clearly communicate any pre-existing health conditions or concerns about your pet’s well-being with Dogtainers
3. Emergency Protocols:
Dogtainers has established emergency protocols to handle unexpected health issues during travel.
4. Access to Veterinary Care:

5. Immediate Notification:
In case of any health concerns, Dogtainers will promptly notify you and provide details on the situation and the steps being taken.
It’s crucial to provide accurate and up-to-date health information about your pet before travel. While any emergency vet bills are paid by the customer, regular communication with Dogtainers ensures that any potential health issues are addressed promptly and with the best possible care.

Is Pet Transport Safe?
Yes, pet transport can be safe when conducted by reputable and professional pet transport services like Dogtainers. These services are experienced in handling the logistics of pet travel, ensuring the safety and well-being of pets throughout their journey.
Pets, including dogs, cats, and various other types such as reptiles, rabbits, birds, and even fish, travel exceptionally well without experiencing adverse side effects. During the journey, they are accommodated in a pressurised, temperature-controlled, and dimly lit section of the cargo hold. Trained airline staff securely strap the travel crates into position, with the aircraft captain setting the cargo hold temperature, typically around 18 degrees Celsius.
Dogtainers adheres strictly to the protocols outlined by IATA in the Live Animals Regulations manual. These regulations encompass crucial aspects like crate specifications, airport and airline restrictions, and ensuring safe travelling conditions. Additionally, Dogtainers leverages a nationwide network of government-accredited vets to meet timely blood tests, administer necessary vaccinations, all within a controlled veterinary environment, minimising risks to your pet.
To ensure the safest and most efficient journey, Dogtainers selects the shortest routes to all destinations. In cases where a direct route is not feasible, the staff may provide a personal comfort stop in transit at the airport terminal, if time allows. Throughout the flight, your pet will have continuous access to water. For more information on preparing your pet for transport, refer to our guide on pet travel preparation.
Can both my pets travel in the same crate?
If you have two pets flying to the same location, arranging them in the same crate to keep each other company is possible. However, it’s important to note that IATA doesn’t recommend pets sharing the same crate due to potential stress and the possibility of unpredictable behaviour, especially if some pets are anxious travellers.
For pets to travel in the same crate, they must meet the following requirements:
1. They are the same species.
2. They are similar in size and weight (with a maximum difference of 2 KG).
3. They are used to cohabitation (from the same litter).
4. They are under 6 months old and weigh under 14 KG each.
Additionally, it’s possible to place a maximum of 3 pets in a crate if they are under 6 months old, with individual weights under 14 KG. Keep in mind that each airline may have its own restrictions, so it’s advisable to check with our travel experts before deciding on crate arrangements for your puppies and kittens.
What happens if my pet soils the bedding during their journey?
If your pet is travelling a long distance, it’s natural for them to relieve themselves during the journey. However, with no bathroom facilities available during flights or road transports, taking precautions is crucial.
To minimise the likelihood of soiling during a domestic flight, it’s highly recommended to stop feeding your pet at least 8 hours before the trip. Additionally, take your dog on long walks and ensure your cat has access to their litter box before the journey.
If your pet soils the bedding before the flight takes off, the airline will reject boarding until the crate is cleaned. In such situations, the airline will contact Dogtainers to advise that a crate must be cleaned. There are then two possible solutions:
1. The client returns to clean the crate.
2. Our team goes to the airport to clean the crate.
Unless you have a Domestic Pet Transit Plan attached to your booking, there will be an additional charge for a Dogtainers team member to attend and clean your pet’s crate after lodgment.
If your pet soils the bedding during the flight, it’s acceptable. For domestic flights, you can purchase deluxe vet bedding that absorbs moisture and urine inside the travel crate. International flights include complimentary vet beddings to keep your pets comfortable and dry. When picking up your pet from the airport, bring a towel and wet wipes to freshen them up.
Will my pet remain in the crate till they are picked up?
Yes, your pet will remain inside the crate for the duration of their journey to ensure their safety. Airline staff are not permitted to remove your pet from the crate. Additionally, they secure the crate doors with zip ties to ensure they stay closed during the flight and any turbulence.
Who will take care of my pet during the layover?
If your pet is travelling on a flight with a layover, either the airline officials or our team will take care of them on the ground. During the layover, your pet will be placed in a comfort area and regularly supervised.
For short layovers, your pet may remain on the flight and be transferred to their connecting flight to continue their journey. If the layover exceeds 3 hours, your pet will enjoy a welfare stop, during which the Dogtainers team will perform a check at the airport to ensure your pet’s well-being. In cases where the layover extends beyond 5 hours or is the next day, our team will collect your pet from the airport and bring them back to our offices for a break and a quick stretch.
In the event of an overnight layover, your pet will have access to food and water to ensure their well-being during the extended break. Your pet will then be returned at the appropriate time to board the next flight.
Do dogs need a passport to travel?
Not the way humans do. Often pets require a “Pet Passport” or similar documentation to travel internationally. Usually this is covered by a vaccination booklet. The specific requirements can vary depending on the destination country. In general, pet passports may include proof of microchipping, rabies vaccination, and other health records.
It’s important to check the regulations of the destination country and work with a professional pet transport service like Dogtainers to ensure all necessary documentation is in order for your dog’s travel. They can provide guidance on the specific requirements based on the destination and help you navigate the process smoothly.
Why does it cost so much to transport my pet?
The cost of transporting a pet can vary based on several factors, and it’s influenced by a combination of logistical, safety, and regulatory considerations. Pet transportation involves specialized handling to ensure the safety and well-being of your furry companion throughout the journey. Trained professionals are required to handle various aspects of the process, including crate preparation, loading, and unloading.
International and domestic travel for pets often involves compliance with stringent regulations, health checks, vaccinations, and documentation, all of which contribute to the overall cost. Additionally, a human must complete every step of the pet’s journey, adding to the logistical complexity and cost of the service.
Airlines and pet transport services implement safety measures to protect pets during transit, including climate-controlled environments, secure crates, and additional precautions to minimize stress and ensure a comfortable journey. Coordinating pet transport involves managing various logistical complexities, such as coordinating flights, layovers, and ground transportation, contributing to the overall cost of the service.
Many countries require health certificates and vet checks before allowing a pet to enter, further contributing to the overall cost of pet transportation. Additionally, Dogtainers can provide Domestic Pet Transit Plans to safeguard against extra costs caused by unforeseen events or emergencies during the journey.
While the cost may seem high, it reflects the comprehensive care, safety measures, and compliance necessary to ensure a smooth and secure journey for your pet. Working with reputable pet transport services like Dogtainers can provide transparency about the costs and ensure a reliable and professional experience for your pet’s travel.
Do dogs need to go through health checks for domestic trips?
For domestic trips within Australia, pets generally do not need to undergo health checks, as the country maintains uniform biosecurity standards across states. However, there are some exceptions:
If your pet is a snub-nosed breed, airline regulations mandate a BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) test to be performed by a Dogtainers-approved vet before travel. The cost of this test will be included in your booking.
If your pet is between 8 and 12 weeks or over 12 years old, a fit-to-fly certificate must be provided from any registered vet. This certificate must explicitly state the pet’s age and confirm that they are fit and healthy for travel.
If your dog is travelling to Tasmania, specific requirements apply. Dogs need to be treated for hydatids, and they should consume a tablet 14 days before departure.
As per the Tasmanian government regulations, dogs can be allowed into Tasmania if accompanied by one of the following:
1. A veterinary certificate (issued by a registered veterinarian) detailing effective treatment within 14 days of export to Tasmania.
2. A statutory declaration made by the dog owner indicating effective treatment within 14 days of export to Tasmania.
3. Evidence of effective treatment, such as the worming product packet.
The above documentation, with the exception of the BOAS test, must be presented to the airline upon lodgment.
