The Considerations

Transporting Zoo Animals

Transporting zoo animals presents numerous challenges and requires careful consideration of various factors. The size and unique characteristics of different animals must be taken into account — some are large, needing special equipment and facilities, while others have specific handling requirements due to their behaviour, dietary needs or health conditions.

Another crucial aspect is the need to comply with legal requirements and obtain the necessary permits and documentation. Different countries and regions have specific regulations governing the import and export of exotic animals. We possess a deep understanding of the complex paperwork and permits required, allowing us to navigate the bureaucracy and streamline the documentation process for our clients.

The logistics of zoo animal transport require meticulous planning and coordination. We carefully consider appropriate travel containers, temperature control and ventilation to create a safe, secure environment — developing customised transport solutions that take into account the specific needs of each species and ensure their well-being throughout the journey.

Case Study

Tasmanian Devil Transport

In 2020, we successfully moved 8 Tasmanian devils from the Australian Reptile Park to Tasmania, Launceston, for a conservation breeding program. We arranged a Virgin passenger jet and emptied the whole plane for transport. In order to transport the Tasmanian devils, special permits were required and it took our team 3 months to help coordinate the 2 collections, and the Tasmanian department of primary industry was very satisfied with our service and pricing.

Compliance

Regulatory Compliance

Different jurisdictions and countries have specific regulations in place to safeguard the welfare of animals during transport. These regulations may include permits for the import or export of certain species, as well as documentation to verify the legal and ethical sourcing of animals. Our team at Dogtainers is well-versed in these requirements and works closely with our clients to obtain the necessary permits and ensure all documentation is accurate and up to date. We understand the importance of meticulous attention to detail in this aspect, as non-compliance can result in serious legal consequences and jeopardise the well-being of the animals.

Quarantine is another crucial aspect of zoo animal transport. Many countries have stringent quarantine requirements to prevent the spread of diseases and ensure the health of both the transported animals and the local wildlife. Our team has a thorough understanding of quarantine regulations and works closely with quarantine facilities and authorities to ensure smooth and compliant transitions for the animals. We follow strict protocols and procedures to mitigate any risks and provide a safe and secure environment during the quarantine period.
